Teenage heartthrob left Hollywood to focus on family

In the 1980s, Kirk Cameron was one of Hollywood’s most beloved teenage actors. His role as Mike Seaver in the sitcom Growing Pains made him a household name, and his charming looks earned him a spot on the covers of countless teen magazines.

Despite his success, acting was not Cameron’s first passion. He had originally aspired to become a doctor. His career path changed when his mother, encouraged by a friend, introduced him to acting. Surprisingly, his early roles included a McDonald’s commercial. Though he never enjoyed acting, he found himself consistently landing roles.

The Journey to Faith

Growing up, Cameron did not come from a religious background. By the age of 16, he identified as an atheist. He once stated, “If you had asked me, I would have said I was an atheist at 16 or 17.” His beliefs were shaped by his education, where science was emphasized, and religion was dismissed as a fairytale.

A turning point came when he met a girl he was interested in. She invited him to church, and though he attended for her, the experience profoundly impacted him. Over time, he developed a deep faith that changed his outlook on life and career.

Struggles with Hollywood

Cameron’s newfound faith began to influence his approach to acting. His transformation did not go unnoticed. The producers of Growing Pains were concerned that his devotion would interfere with the show.

He later recalled, “They worried I was going off the deep end, and it would affect the show.” His faith also caused tensions with co-stars and crew members as he became more selective about his roles.

Leaving Hollywood for Family

Disillusioned with Hollywood’s culture, Cameron felt increasingly uncomfortable with the industry. He stated, “The darkness and twisted sickness of Hollywood has been going on for a long time.”

At 20, he married his Growing Pains co-star Chelsea Noble, and together they built a family with six children, four of whom are adopted. Adoption became a passion for them, as Chelsea herself had been adopted. They ensured their adopted children stayed connected to their biological roots.

Relocating from California

In 2021, Cameron publicly announced his plans to leave California. He cited safety concerns and a desire for a community with wholesome values.

After seeking recommendations, he settled on Tennessee, where three of his children already lived. He appreciated the slower pace of life and described Tennessee as a “hub for Christian projects.”

Life Today: Grandfather and Filmmaker

In 2024, Cameron welcomed his first grandchild, Maya Jeanne Noble Bower. He shared his excitement on social media, writing, “Our hearts are overflowing with joy.”

Despite leaving Hollywood, Cameron continues his work as a filmmaker. In 2022, he released Lifemark, a film celebrating life and adoption, reflecting his personal experiences.
