Martin, who used the van as his home during his senior year, later sold it to his business partner, Megan Krystle Weinraub, in the summer. On January 5th, Weinraub parked Azul near her apartment after a surfing trip, just two days before the fires erupted in the Palisades.
When the fires began, Weinraub had no choice but to flee with her dog, leaving Azul behind. The fire engulfed the area, destroying homes and lives, yet Azul remained unscathed. Two days later, a neighbor sent Weinraub a photo of the van, bright blue against the blackened, desolate backdrop.
“I freaked out,” Weinraub told AP. “I was in the bathroom, and I screamed.” She immediately called Martin, who was equally astonished. “There is magic in that van,” he said. “It makes no sense why this happened. It should have been toasted, but here we are.”
